Terror in Our Time (Hardcover): Ken Booth, Tim Dunne Terror in Our Time (Hardcover)
Ken Booth, Tim Dunne
R4,594 Discovery Miles 45 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Written by two leading scholars, this book is an accessible overview of the global political consequences of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The War on Terror has defined the first decade of this century. It has been marked by the deaths of thousands of people, political turmoil, massive destruction, and intense fear. Regardless of the name it goes under, the long war on terror will continue to affect lives across the world. Its catalyst, 9/11, did not have to happen, nor did the character of the responses. This book offers a set of novel interpretations of how we got here, where we are, and where we should be heading. It is organised around twelve penetrating and readable essays, full of novel interpretations and succinct summaries of complex ideas and events. In their examination of those aspects of global order touched by terror, the authors argue that the dangers of international terrorism are not overblown. Future 9/11s are possible: so is a more just and law-governed world. Terrorism cannot be disinvented, but with more intelligent policies than have been on show these past ten years, it can be overcome and made politically anachronistic.

This book will be essential reading for all students of terrorism studies, international security, war and conflict studies and IR in general, as well as of much interest to well-informed lay readers.

A group of leading academics considers how the European states system developed as the historical and institutional expression of political community. The scope of this volume is broad, including conventional accounts of the development of the European states system as well as the non-European experience. In particular, it inquires as to how and why a states system triumphed over other forms of political organization.

Human Rights in Global Politics (Hardcover): Tim Dunne, Nicholas J. Wheeler Human Rights in Global Politics (Hardcover)
Tim Dunne, Nicholas J. Wheeler
R2,232 Discovery Miles 22 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is a stark contradiction between the theory of universal human rights and the everyday practice of human wrongs. This timely volume investigates whether human rights abuses are a result of the failure of governments to live up to a universal human rights standard, or whether the search for moral universals is a fundamentally flawed enterprise which distracts us from the task of developing rights in the context of particular ethical communities. In the first part of the book chapters by Ken Booth, Jack Donnelly, Chris Brown, Bhikhu Parekh and Mary Midgley explore the philosophical basis of claims to universal human rights. In the second part, Richard Falk, Mary Kaldor, Martin Shaw, Gil Loescher, Georgina Ashworth and Andrew Hurrell reflect on the role of the media, global civil society, states, migration, non-governmental organisations, capitalism, and schools and universities in developing a global human rights culture.

The Dynamics of Industrial Competition - A North American Perspective (Hardcover, New): John R. Baldwin, Paul Gorecki The Dynamics of Industrial Competition - A North American Perspective (Hardcover, New)
John R. Baldwin, Paul Gorecki; Contributions by Richard E Caves, Tim Dunne, John Haltiwanger
R3,104 Discovery Miles 31 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Dynamics of Industrial Competition describes the internal dynamics of industries using new and unique longitudinal data that make it possible to track firms over time. It provides a comprehensive picture of a number of aspects of firm turnover in North America that arise from the competitive process - the entry and the exit of firms, the growth and the decline of incumbent firms, and the merger process. Instantaneous and cumulative measures of market dynamics are provided. Since the forces contributing to competition are varied and industries are affected by heterogeneous forces, different aspects of firm turnover are considered in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the competitive process. Entry is divided into that portion coming from the creation of new plants and that portion arising from the acquisition of existing firms. Differences are drawn between the effects of related and unrelated acquisitions and between the effects of take-overs made by domestic and foreign firms. Differences between large- and small-firm activity are also investigated. The effects of turnover on productivity, efficiency, wage rates, and profitability are extensively model led. Using various measures of firm turnover to proxy the amount of competition, the study examines and contextualizes the relationship between industry performance and the intensity of the competitive process.

The Interregnum: Controversies in World Politics 1989-1999 (Paperback): Michael Cox, Ken Booth, Tim Dunne The Interregnum: Controversies in World Politics 1989-1999 (Paperback)
Michael Cox, Ken Booth, Tim Dunne; Foreword by Christopher J. Hill

We are living in an era which seemingly defies description: in social and political theory, our age is frequently referred to as "postmodern;" in international relations, we remain in the "post-Cold War" age. The age is only characterized by what it is not. This collection of critical reflections, written by leading scholars in the field, will shed light on the meanings of world politics in what we are calling The Interregnum.

There is a stark contradiction between the theory of universal human rights and the everyday practice of human wrongs. This timely volume brings together leading scholars to evaluate this paradox. The contributors ask whether human rights abuses are a result of the failure of governments to live up to a universal human rights standard, or whether the search for moral universals is a fundamentally flawed enterprise. The book evaluates the philosophical basis of human rights, and reflects on the structures that affect the development of a global human rights culture.

A distinguished group of contributors trace the development of the subject through the main historical periods and in relation to key debates: ethics, power and nationalism; conditions of peace; law and peaceful change; and globalization. It provides the most comprehensive survey of the discipline's past and the key issues to be faced in the future.

The Dynamics of Industrial Competition - A North American Perspective (Paperback, Revised): John R. Baldwin, Paul Gorecki The Dynamics of Industrial Competition - A North American Perspective (Paperback, Revised)
John R. Baldwin, Paul Gorecki; Contributions by Richard E Caves, Tim Dunne, John Haltiwanger
R1,115 Discovery Miles 11 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Dynamics of Industrial Competition provides the first extensive quantitative examination of the processes associated with competition: entry and exit, mergers, growth and decline of incumbent firms. It uses a unique data base to investigate phenomena that have rarely been measured and even more rarely set side by side so as to provide a comprehensive picture of the intensity of competition and its effects on productivity, efficiency and profitability. It will be of interest to all social scientists who are concerned with the workings of markets--economists, political scientists, government specialists, as well as antitrust lawyers.

The Globalization of International Society (Paperback): Tim Dunne, Christian Reus-Smit The Globalization of International Society (Paperback)
Tim Dunne, Christian Reus-Smit
R1,440 Discovery Miles 14 400 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Globalization of International Society re-examines the development of today's society of sovereign states, drawing on a wealth of new scholarship to challenge the landmark account presented in Bull and Watson's classic work, The Expansion of International Society (OUP, 1984). For Bull and Watson, international society originated in Europe, and expanded as successive waves of new states were integrated into a rule-governed order. International society, on their view, was thus a European cultural artefact - a claim that is at odds with recent scholarship in history, politics, and related fields of research. Bringing together leading scholars from Asia, Australia, Europe, and the United States, this book provides an alternative account: it draws out the diversity of polities that existed at around c1500; it shows how interacting identities, political orders, and economic forces were intensifying within and across regions; it details the tangled dynamics that helped to globalize the European conception of a pluralist international society, through patterns of warfare and between East and West. The Globalization of International Society examines the institutional contours of contemporary international society, with its unique blend of universal sovereignty and global law, and its forms of hierarchy that coexist with commitments to international human rights. The book explores the multiple forms of contestation that challenge international society today: contests over the limits of sovereignty in relation to cosmopolitan conceptions of responsibility, disputes over global governance, concerns about persistent economic, racial, and gender-based patterns of disadvantage, and lastly the threat to the established order opened up by the disruptive power of digital communications.

Diplomatic Investigations - Essays on the Theory of International Politics (Paperback): Herbert Butterfield, Martin Wight Diplomatic Investigations - Essays on the Theory of International Politics (Paperback)
Herbert Butterfield, Martin Wight; Introduction by Tim Dunne, Ian Hall
R1,500 Discovery Miles 15 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diplomatic Investigations is a classic work in the field of International Relations. It is one of the few books in the field of International Relations (IR) that can be called iconic. Edited by Herbert Butterfield and Martin Wight, it brings together twelve papers delivered to early meetings of the British Committee on the Theory of International Politics, including several classic essays: Wight's 'Why is there no International Theory?' and 'Western Values in International Relations', Hedley Bull's 'Society and Anarchy in International Relations' and 'The Grotian Conception of International Society', and the two contributions made by Butterfield and by Wight on 'The Balance of Power'. Individually and collectively, these chapters have influenced not just the English school of international relations, but also a range of other approaches to the field of IR. After Diplomatic Investigations ceased to be available in print, it became a highly sought after book in the second-hand marketplace. This reissue, which includes a new introduction by Ian Hall and Tim Dunne, will ensure the book is available in the normal way, thereby enabling new generations of students and scholars to appreciate the work.
